"De-snaking"

De-snaking is a program where your dogs are taught to recognize and avoid snakes. This can be a very important procedure as most dogs have a natural curiosity about snakes and will not naturally avoid them. Venomous snake bites can cause large vet bills, take several months for full recovery, and in some cases, be fatal for the dog.

The de-snaking program sponsored at Ridgewood Kennels is a very fast, cost- effective, and safe procedure. It only takes about 20 minutes for a de-snaking session, and most dogs need only an initial session and a couple of refreshers during their lifetime. The snakes used are rattlesnakes which have been defanged and have had their mouths stapled shut with surgical staples - even if a snake does make contact with a dog, there is no chance of a bite wound or envenomation.

De-snaking is usually scheduled once per year, usually in August. This timing allows for the procedure to be fresh with the dogs as they head into the upcoming hunting seasons. De-snaking clinics can also be scheduled on an as-needed basis for organizations willing to provide a location and a sufficient number of dogs.

We schedule a de-snaking clinic at the kennels on the first Saturday in August every year. In addition, we hold de-snaking clinics during the month of August around the state for multiple dog clubs. See the De-snake Calendar for details.
